Kumbakonam in TamilNadu is famous for the number of temples; there are more than 40 of them within the limits of a small town.  Sarangapani temple is the most notable and admired with its big stupa.  This is a Vishnu temple; however, the interest lies in the similarity very evident between this and the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple in Trivandrum.

The sculptures in Sarangapani temple are skilfully crafted and a marvel to look at.  They are maintained extremely well even to this day.  Shown in picture is the scene of Narasimha killing Hiranyakasipu in front of Prahlada and his mother.

In both temples, Vishnu is in "anantasayanam".  The idol is an exact replica of the one found in Trivandrum too.  It need not be a big surprise, however since both temples were constructed by the same dynasty even though at different points in time.

These pictures will be food for some thought.  Obviously, Sarangapni temple would have pre-dated Padmanabhaswamy temple.
